St. John's Church

Newark, NJ

St. John’s Church located on Mulberry Street, Newark, New Jersey was Father John’s former parish. St. John’s is located in the heart of Newark’s business district and was the first Catholic Parish in the Archdiocese of Newark. The Church has from the beginning offered a safe harbor for those in need.

Yearly, the Farther John Foundation makes a donation to St. John’s to help fund the Feed the Hungry Program. St. John’s is currently providing over 700 meals daily, and is fully funded by donations. This is a huge increase from the 4,000 meals Father John and his caring volunteers served the first year of the “Soup Kitchen.” St John’s has served over 6 million breakfast and dinners along with its various other work including offering medical services and a Women and Children’s Center.

Former Pastor’s Foundation Awards

$10,000 Grant to St. John’s Soup Kitchen | Newark, NJ

Monsignor John P. Hourihan, pastor of St. John’s Church on Mulberry Street in Newark from 1977 to his death in 2008, was devoted to serving the poor, homeless and hearing impaired. Father John, as he was affectionately known to his parishioners and members of the business community in Newark’s Gateway office buildings, started a soup kitchen at St. John’s that still exists today as does his legacy of service to others.

In 1997 Father John founded and funded the “Father John Foundation” for the handicapped and poor. This perpetual, charitable fund provides annual gifts and grants to organizations that serve the homeless, hungry, handicapped and hearing impaired. The Father John Foundation Board of Trustees has announced awards for the 2015-2016 grant period, including a $10,000 gift to St. John’s Soup Kitchen. Nine other organizations also received grants to support their work.

“When Father John first started feeding the poor in Newark more than 30 years ago it was a much smaller effort,” according to Joe Zoppi, Trustee and Treasurer for the Father John Foundation. “Today they are feeding more than 300 people a day. We are pleased to be able to support this work that continues Father John’s original mission.”
